Save Money on Ignition Coil Replacement: 8 Strategies + Warranty & TSB Guide
The biggest savings come from two places: checking your warranty before paying anything, and confirming the coil is actually bad before buying it. The other six strategies stack on top.
8 Strategies
Confirm with the coil swap test before buying parts
Do not spend $80-$300 on a coil that was not the problem. The coil swap test is free if you own a scanner, or $45 for a basic scanner. Procedure: see /misfire-codes.
Choose an independent shop over a dealer
Independent shops charge $110-$135/hr. Dealers charge $140-$180/hr (luxury: $160-$220/hr). Same Denso/NGK/Bosch parts, identical quality. Use the dealer only when under warranty or when specialty diagnostics are needed.
Get 3 quotes
Ask each shop: 'What is your hourly rate? What book hours are you quoting? What brand of coil do you use? Is there a warranty on the work?' Labour rate and book-hour interpretation vary 10-20% within the same metro area.
Use quality aftermarket instead of the cheapest
Denso, NGK, Bosch, or Delphi coils at $35-$80 each will outlast a $12 no-name by 40,000-60,000 miles. Cheap coils fail at 25-40k mi. You pay the full labour charge twice. The $28 saving on the cheap coil costs $90-$150 in repeat labour.
DIY the easy engines
4-cyl COP (Civic, Corolla, Camry 4-cyl) and V8 front bank are 10-25 minute jobs with a 10mm socket. Save $60-$300 in labour. Tools investment: $30-$80 from zero, $15-$40 if you own a basic set.
Bundle when the engine bay is open
Timing belt service, valve cover gasket replacement, intake manifold gasket, spark plug replacement. Labour overlap saves 0.5-2.0 hr. Especially valuable on V6 rear-bank work where the intake is already off.
Replace spark plugs at the same time
If plugs are past 60k mi, the marginal cost to add plugs is $30-$90 in parts and 5 minutes per cylinder since coils are already out. A separate plug job later costs $150-$300.
Check your warranty and TSBs first
The most important strategy. A qualifying VIN can make the entire repair free. See the warranty section below.
